My Interview with My Number One Fan

Mary’s Interview with Jayson James

My number one fan, Mary came up with some interview questions for me to answer. Below are the questions and my responses to them.

1) When you sit down to write, do you make an outline for your book or do you just go with what comes to you?

I do it in a variety of ways.  It all depends on the book.  Most of the time I have a general idea for what I want for a storyline and I will sit down and write it out along with notes (especially if I’m afraid I will forget what it was.) Sometimes I have a complete idea in my head and then I outline most of the book because as I get into writing there are other ideas that pop into my head.  These parts (I call them inspirational parts) are often people’s favorite parts of the book.  They are scenes that pop into my head and I will incorporate them immediately in the book.

I have a board by my desk, on which at some point during the project, I will jot down notes directly onto it or using Post-It notes.  My board has always been too small for me, yet I have never gotten a bigger one!  It is typically when it gets overflowing with idea that I buckle down and get these ideas written.

In short, yes, I do outline.

2) If Cooper could tell us a few secrets about you what would they be?

Oh my goodness!  That’s a scary thought!  Cooper is with me most of the time when I am not at work.  She is always the one insisting I take a break.  I think she would say that I am always on the run, and that I am busy and always have something going on.  Though I know she is spoiled, she is not bratty, so I don’t think she realizes it.  I think she would say that I am busy and always have something going on.  She would tell you that our walks are twice as far and long when I am talking on the phone.  I cannot think of anything else she might share. Wink Wink!

3) You always post about movies and television shows that you are watching while writing or drawing, BESIDES One Direction (HEEHEE), is there another go to show that you put on?

Ha!  Most of the time I listen to either a movie or music, depending on my mood I suppose.  The movie has to be one that’s both a favorite of mine and one that will not distract me, but has parts that I can watch as I work out ideas in my head.  Some of my favorites, those I will watch over and over while writing are:  Easy A, Go, Pitch Perfect and Shelter. These are just a few of that come to mind immediately.  One Direction This Is Us has been great to have playing though – I will let it play all the way through several times during my writing time.

As far as television shows go, I cannot think of any that do not distract me from my writing, drawing.   There are a few that I like to put on for background noise and then I get sucked into them.  The O.C. is one that I have tried several times and get into a full on marathon of taking a break and watching the whole series.  Each time I put it on I think I am not going to get sucked into it, yet I do!

Music can be good, as long as the tunes I listen to match my creative mindset.  There have been times when I’ve been all set to write, turn on one of the music channels to a song that inspires me and two songs later they are playing something that doesn’t sync with my writing mood.

4) Has there ever been a time that you would jump into one of your books to interact with your characters? Which book and which characters would it be?

Derrick Wilson and Justin Parker from the Finding Our Way Series for sure, seeing as they are so much a part of me.  A few of my friends suggested that I do something with them, although I was not ready to write another book with them, I did miss writing them.  I came up with these posts where they high -jacked my blog as well as those of a few others.  I have always enjoyed writing them as I have an idea for them.  They are always well received too!

5) Do you plan to draw all of the covers for your books?

If it were up to me, there are times I would like to say no.  When I went to publish Finding Our Way, my friends were all over me to put one of my drawings on the cover.  I thought I would later go back and change the cover to real models, if I could ever find one that looked just right (and not on other covers).  I was more afraid of my drawings being bashed more than my book.  My drawing was something I had always kept private, beyond my various cartooning and I was embarrassed about using it.  I laugh at that now.  I get more fan mail and various compliments about my drawing than I do any of my books.

6) If you were having lunch with someone that is not in your everyday life, who would it be and why?

Finally an easy question to answer!  You Mary and Claudine Clarke most definitely would be the pair I would like to lunch with.  From the moment I met each of you, as we have discussed, we just seemed to click.  I have always been able to just be myself with each of you and feel as if I could tell you anything.  Although we have yet to meet in person, we “get” and know each other well.  It is rare that you find someone who gets who you really are and still appreciates you.  That is what I have with you two.  I could see us talking and laughing together long after we’d worn out our welcome at wherever we had lunch.

7) Can you tell us about a WIP that you have going now?

I have a book getting ready to published titled Pieces of Us. And I need to get my act together and work on the cover art!  I’m just waiting on my inspiration for that to kick back in.  The idea is in my head and I am working out the details.  Pieces of Us is about two best friends since elementary school, Jesse and Dylan, who are in the end of their freshman year of high school, looking forward to summer.  The story is set in 1988, when time and views were considerable different than they are now.  It takes place around the growing these two friends do together and apart as the summer moves forward.

POU is about Jesse and Dylan, two best friends since middle school, looking forward to summer.  …..It involves the growing and self- realizations that these two friends do together and apart as the summer progresses.

Riding on the momentum of finishing one book, I have begun working on another.  This one is currently called How It Was Supposed To Be, but I am not sure if I am going to keep this title. We’ll see as work progresses on it.  This book is about Reese Chandler, a high school junior whose dad has lost his job and how quickly he goes from having the ideal life to being homeless.  Though the story might sound a bit depressing, I have, worked out in my head since I was kid, during various trips in the car with my family.  The story itself has evolved over the years and wasn’t until recently that that I felt I had enough of the story to write out. It’s funny because I already have 19,000 words on paper as well as the cover image drawn for it, yet I am not sure if it will be my next book.

I also have TNT a book that centers on Tyler and Tyson Hensley, the twins from the Finding Our Way Series.  This book takes place when the twins are in middle school and will give an insight into each of them as individuals as well as a pair.

8) When it comes to fans, what are your views on them?

Who doesn’t enjoy being appreciated?  Fans are great!  I am delighted to have gained a few loyal readers who enjoy and appreciate my work.  For them I am grateful to have in my life.  As crazy as it might sound, I have always thought that when I strike it big, I would love to have a big party for those who have and continue to support, promote and believe in me.

9) Although you’ve done well as an Indy author, do you think you will ever go through a publisher?

Although a publisher expressed interest in publishing my first book, we were well on our way to self-publishing.  My friends have always been interested in reading through and editing my writing and it has been a real bonding experience for me with them.  When someone has decided they do not want to or can’t help out, I’ve gained a few others. Recently I had the chance to go with a publisher, interested in all of my current published work as well as the remaining books in the series.  As it stands right now, I am proud of what I have accomplished with the help of my friends and I want to keep things as they are.  Each time I release a book, I gain more readers and friends.  I like how things are.  As my friends know, if the chance arises for me to quit my day job and be able to survive on my creativity, I will.  We’ll cross that bridge when it comes to it.

10) Who would you cast in a movie about Justin and Derrick? Feel free to add the rest of the cast if you'd like!

When I wrote all three books, I had Keir Gilchrist in mind for Derrick Wilson, however he never seemed right to me.  One day I saw Logan Lerman in an interview and I thought immediately he would be a much better Derrick.  As far as Justin Parker, I have always envisioned Josh Hutcherson when I was writing him and I still think he would be the best choice to play him.  Hayden I have always seen played by Johnny Simmons while Ryan I am always toying with different Mexican actors, currently I am undecided.  Tyson and Tyler Hensley I think would be played well (however, without the British accent) by Jack and Finn Harries, seeing that the two of them together capture both the look and attitude I imagined them having.  Stacy is another one I have not found the right person, the actress would need to be tough, but sweet. (I have yet to find the right actress to portray Stacy, but she would have to be tough but sweet)

11) Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Or what do you see yourself doing in 10 years

That’s a tough one.  I’ll be realistic with my answer.  If I have my way, I will be teaching and still publishing books that people like to read, as well as drawing; making money doing two of the things I love to do.

12) If you could go anywhere in the world you wanted tomorrow, where would it be and why?

Good question!  There are several places I would love to go visit: Hawaii
Pennsylvania, New York, Arizona, England, to name a few. There are so many!

Mary for such great questions and giving me a chance to share with my readers.

CC for editing and helping to pull this together.

Interviewed Guest = Jenna Galicki

Thank you Jenna, for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down with me today.

Thank you Jayson, for having me as a guest.

1) When you write from a man’s POV, do you ever have difficulty with wording or how to talk as a man? Who do you use a reference for that?
I don't really find it hard at all.  I guess it's because of all the outspoken men I've known in my life. Not much is sacred - they tell all, as it is, whether I want to hear it or not.
2) You are going on vacation to a Caribbean Island, what 3 things must you have with you? And who would be coming with you?
The first thing is technology! I don't go anywhere without my laptop, tablet and cell phone.  Next would be shoes (gotta have several pairs of killer shoes on hand at all times!).  Third, I need to bring my own sheets.  (I have been scarred for life by that segment on TV with the black light!)  As for a companion, I'd bring The Hubbs with me. We travel a lot and have a good time together.
3) How do you research the music scene to make it so realistic? The Prince Of Punk is very much like what a show really is in person.
I go to A LOT of concerts and they span many different genres.  When I write about the scenes on stage, I recall what it's like to be front row at a concert.
4) What makes Jenna happy on a daily basis?
Interacting with people (I love making new friends), music and my dogs.
5) If you could write a different genre, what would it be and why?
I think it would be suspense because I love the build up and those "OMG, what's going to happen next?!" moments.
6) What do you hope people remember most about you?
I really want people to regard me as a kindhearted person. I have great compassion for all living things and love all people, regardless of their differences.
7) Have you had any fans that have scared you by the way the act or things they have done?

Not at all.  It takes a lot to get under my skin or illicit a negative reaction from me. :-)

Thanks again Jenna for taking time to be my guest today.  Below is more information about Jenna and  her books.

The Prince of Punk Rock

I love her, but I also love him.
She’s everything to me.
He sets my world on fire.
It's our dirty little secret, and it’s about to blow our record deal sky high.
I’m Tommy Blade, the Prince of Punk Rock, and this is our story.

Tommy Blade is a man with a secret. It’s a secret he only shares with one person, Jessi Blade – and the men he surrenders to in the bedroom. Jessi’s only condition to their tumultuous sex life is that the men are one night stands. But when Angel Garcia enters their life, it’s like a match to gasoline.

Mega-talented punk rock singer Angel Garcia, with his smoldering ebony eyes, tight leather pants and unstoppable stage presence, is a man who is used to getting what he wants. He has his eyes set on Tommy Blade as his new lead guitarist, and as his life partner.

Jessi Blade, sympathetic to her husband's bisexual needs, loves him enough to share him, but she never counted on Angel Garcia to test the threshold of her marriage. He makes her life hell . . . and heaven. He’s her damnation and her salvation. She wants to hate him. She wants to despise him. But his charm and raw sex appeal are impossible to resist. Without warning, she finds herself falling in love with her husband's gay lover.

At the height of it all, their punk rock band catapults to stardom.

Their lives are marred by secrecy, deception and sacrifice. Feelings of betrayal, backlash from the sensationalistic media and threats of blackmail send them down a hard road filled with tough decisions.

They aren't your ordinary rock stars. They're radical rock stars. And they have a big story to tell.

He's the shoulder she leans on.
He worships her.
She shields and protects him.
He watches over her.
They're soul mates for life.
They're not lovers; they're best friends.
Their struggle to find someone who can handle their intense bond is met with a roller coaster of raw emotion, loyalty and heartache.
Follow their journey to find love.

When Heather Cooper married Peter, she thought that she had finally found someone who could handle the inseparable bond she shares with her gay best friend, Justin Perrotta. It’s only a matter of time, however, before jealousy rears its ugly head and Peter’s true feelings emerge. He starts drinking and his erratic behavior threatens their marriage.

Burned by an ex-boyfriend, Justin refuses to open his heart to love again. Wild relationships and one night stands leave him lonely and unfulfilled, even though he will not admit it. He finds love when he least expects it, but his fear of commitment threatens to ruin the best thing that has ever happened to him.

In this modern day ‘Will and Grace’ meets ‘Sex and the City’, two best friends, a straight woman and a gay man, struggle to find someone to love as much as they love each other.

Mary the Magnificent

Although I am ready to crash (hard) this evening, I needed to share that I am so grateful to Mary.  We became friends after she read my books and we conversed and long story short, clicked!  There are so the many things so does for me.  Although Mary is not my only friend that is willing to help me out and want to help me succeed, she has taken on the role of being my assistant.  She is always willing to pitch in and lend a hand for a variety of tasks.  Plus she deals with me -- as an author and an artist!

This week, Mary shared with me the promo spots she put together to advertise my books.  What she out together far exceeded what I was hoping to get.  Not only did she come up with some great images and a theme, she put together a full fledged ad campaign.  I am looking forward to seeing this posted and shared.

Thank you Mary for being my number one fan!

Interviewed Guest = Felicity Nichols

My featured guest today is, Felicity Nichols from Mad in Wonderland Reviews, who has taken time to sit down and answer a few questions for me today.

1) Being a reviewer how do you balance the authors that would like you to review their books?
I am currently trying to find a unique balance for that. I am giving my review family a master list to choose from unless it's due for a promotional event then it gets first priority.

2) Are there any genres that you really don’t like to read?
I am not a huge paranormal fan, it's hard to get into for me.

3) What genre of book would you write yourself?
I would write erotica, it's my favorite to read.

4) Let’s pretend you are a secret agent, who are you guarding and why?
I would be guarding my daughter, always. I would guard her because there are too many evils in the world and too many negative people.

5) If you could go anywhere and do anything what would you do and where are you going?
I would love to just get in the car and drive. Let the roads take me wherever they lead me to.

6) Bridging the gap from reviewing to being an author, do you think that the reviewing you have done will help you avoid things that you have not liked in books you have read?
I have decided not to pursue writing but I think as a review it helps prep me for writing and seeing the things that upset me in writing and avoiding them.

7) When you are at peace, what take you there?
Honestly? Late nights with my daughter when she's fast asleep curled in my chest. It's moments like those that help me remember who I am and what my purpose is. I love my daughter and will always put her first.

Is there anything else you would like to share today?
If you are interested in reviewing for Mad in Wonderland Reviews or are an author seeking reviews, we would love to hear from you!    Link to our blog: http://madinwonderlandreviews.blogspot.com

Thank you Felicity for being my guest today!

Thank you Jayson for having me and featuring me today! It was a blast to chat with you!

Kissing!! Who doesn’t like kissing? Yes, in my stories I have sex scenes and the supernatural and some kidnappings and bad guys and heroes...well, you get the point. But one thing I love is kissing, especially those first kisses where there are butterflies and anticipation and heat and hope and promise. So today, I am sharing with you kisses from three different stories of mine. Enjoy!

Dare To Love Forever
Lincoln raised Carson’s hand and rested it against his cheek. His dark beard scratched at Carson’s palm. Carson raised his chin, met hooded, lust-filled eyes. Butterflies the size of crows beat against Carson’s stomach. Lincoln’s tongue came out and licked at his own lips. Carson’s eyes flicked down to watch the erotic motion. Gods, he wanted to taste those wine-colored lips.

Maybe Lincoln was reading Carson’s mind because Lincoln lifted his other hand and laid it on the back of Carson’s neck. The skin-to-skin contact raced a shiver through Carson’s body all the way to his toes. His cock was so hard and aching, and he wanted to touch it but he refrained, waiting…breathing…yearning, as Lincoln continued to stare right into him.

The hand on his neck tightened and pulled Carson closer, leading him to Lincoln’s lips. Time stopped as he traveled the short distance to those moist lips. Just before they touched, Carson closed his eyes. Lincoln’s hot breaths hit Carson’s face and then their lips came together tentatively, as if they were both waiting for the other to make the move. The electricity sparking from just that touch zipped straight to Carson’s groin and he surged forward, turning his head and opening his mouth while wrapping his arms around Lincoln’s neck. Lincoln’s hand tightened on Carson’s neck and the other wrapped around Carson’s waist and pulled him hard against Lincoln’s chest.

Oh gods, the taste of the man was heavenly, and Carson attacked his lips, teeth clacking, and a moan rising from one of them. Lincoln turned his body and pulled Carson onto his lap. Instantly, Carson humped against Lincoln’s stomach. A scorching heat rose from within and Carson’s control held by only a fragile thread.

Curiosity Killed Shaney
Snuggling the large bear chest, Shaney reveled in their serene closeness. Hudson’s hand gently lifted Shaney’s chin. His gaze searched Shaney’s face for something. He tried to deny the lust he read in Hudson’s intense eyes. If only...

Hudson leaned closer, his gaze straying to Shaney’s mouth. Short gasps of air fanned his skin as Hudson’s seductive lips descended. Shaney closed his eyes. His breath ceased as a tentative caress and the swipe of a wet tongue played at his needy lips, sparking nerve endings that zipped straight to his groin.

Any misconceptions he’d had about Hudson’s orientation quickly dissipated. Shaney clenched at the cotton material on Hudson’s back, desperately pulling at the reins of his overwhelming need to rub and rut like a cat in heat. His growing erection pushed at the front of the oversized sweats he’d come to be wearing. The pressure on his lips increased as Hudson’s tongue explored his mouth. Hudson tightened his grip and lifted Shaney until his toes tickled the carpet. One of Hudson’s legs slid between Shaney’s thighs and Hudson lowered him onto that hard-muscled limb and, oh, God, the pressure felt so fucking good.

The kissing turned into an urgent battle of tangling tongues, clacking teeth, and moans filling their combined mouths. Hudson lowered his hand, kneading Shaney’s backside. His other hand ran trembling fingers through the waves at the back of Shaney’s skull, taking full control of the bruising kiss. Shaney rocked his pulsing cock against Hudson’s leg and Hudson’s immense bulge pressed hard into Shaney’s hip, increasing Shaney’s frenzied bucking. Sweat coated Shaney’s forehead and prickled the skin of his back. Growing pressure filled Shaney’s balls, and warm waves of euphoric pleasure filled every cell as Shaney chased his elusive orgasm. He needed to come so badly, wanted it with everything he was, wanted it with Hudson.

Waiting for Snow by JC Wallace

Strong fingers touched Dain’s neck, kneading the rock hard muscles. Dropping his head forward, Dain willed the relaxation to filter through every muscle of his body.

“What happened that night, Dain?”

Two thumbs rubbed over the top of Dain’s spine and he moaned. Any inkling of his migraine dissipated.  Soaking in every inch of those hands, he said, “If I tell, it’ll grow arms and legs and a head and fucking eat me alive.”

Jake leaned over his shoulder and whispered. “I won’t let that happen. I won’t let anyone hurt you again.” Dain shuddered, and fuck, if he didn’t believe every word. But the minute he spilled the details of that awful night and his past, Jake’s touches would stop and he needed that touch like a man dying of thirst.

Warm air feathered across Dain’s cheek and Jake whispered, “I lied earlier.”

Dain licked at his dry lips. “About what?”

"I don’t want to be your friend, Sweetheart."

The seductive whisper ran straight to Dain's cock. Dain wanted to touch Jake, kiss him, lick him. No one had touched Dain since Mick. Fuck friendship.

“Don’t want that either.” God, his dick was speaking for him now.

Dain turned and a hot spike of desire shot straight to his core as their eyes connected. Jake’s chest rose rapidly and his eyes hooded. Dain placed a hand over Jake’s racing heart as Jake’s large hands settled gently on Dain’s hips. With shallow breaths, shaky legs, and heart pounding against his ribs, Dain lifted his chin.

“Kiss me,” he whispered.

Their lips crashed together like a breaking tide. Tongues tangled and the kiss took on an increasing urgency, but Jake pulled back and, with a frowning confusion, searched Dain’s eyes for something. Dain wanted to question him, but need overruled. Opening for another kiss, Dain ate at Jake’s mouth as if he were starving. Jake’s hands ran down Dain’s back then squeezed his ass. Dain bucked his hips and Jake answered with a buck of his own. Shit, a mammoth bulge pressed into Dain’s stomach. God, he wanted this man here and now, forever.

Carson Locke is a Tabula Rosa vampire—a dangerous rarity in the world of vampires. With one bite, he can wipe clean a vampire’s mind, creating a mindless drone. Because of this, Carson has spent his entire twenty-three years sheltered at home. That changes when his entire family is murdered. Now on the run and near death, Carson meets Commander Lincoln Samuels, a beautiful vampire who tries to heal him. In doing so, Carson is bonded to the vampire and turned into something the vampire world has never seen. When Carson is poisoned, he believes that someone wants him dead as well, however there are greater plans for Carson put into motion hundreds of years before his birth.

Lincoln is a Sanatore vampire with the ability to heal other vampires. He heads a team in the New Vampire Justice police force in Utica, NY. Late one night, he is called to a local Vampire Blood Market where a starving Tabula Rosa vampire is about to be executed by one of his officers. Feeling a strong connection to Carson, Lincoln wants to heal the broken man despite knowing the risk in doing so. Healing Carson could destroy Lincoln and cost him the chance to love again. What Lincoln finds is that there is a greater evil threatening to take Carson from him.

Can two vampires who have loved and painfully lost in the past, learn to trust one another, defeat the evil rising against them, and dare to love forever?

Descending farther, the flashlight flickered. Carson froze. Stopping to shake the light, he could hear the beating of his overwrought heart in his ears, feel the knot of dread expand in his gut. Gods, if he had anything in his stomach to throw up, he would. Right now, he needed the blood that the Vampire Blood Market (VBM) provided. Carson’s teeth had only sunk into a vein once and the nightmare of that moment had forever been burned into his memory. Besides, from what he’d heard, the bite hurt the donor like a bitch. That was mainly the sport of pain sluts and adrenaline junkies who visited bars where biting was still legal. In his isolated world of Gifford, NY, blood had always been supplied. Now, he had to feed himself. Without money, that meant stealing what he needed.
At the bottom of the stairs, he peered through the small window into the VBM. Walls of illuminated refrigerated cases held blood in containers similar to milk jugs. Unfortunately, stealing milk didn’t hold the same consequence as stealing blood.
Ignoring the dangerousness of his mission, Carson grasped the door handle. What he feared would be locked opened freely. Inside the VBM, the refrigerated cases hummed. The air was cooler than in the hallway. Carson’s mouth watered and his empty stomach clenched tight. Rushing to the first case, he pulled open the door. He grabbed the closest opaque white container and ripped the top off. Just as he lifted the container with the lifesaving liquid to his lips, the lights came on and a voice shouted, “Freeze!”
Carson dropped the container and gasped. His heart pushed into overdrive, his breaths barely escaped his throat. He gaped at the three men and two women dressed in black uniforms pointing guns at him. Carson tried to remain still but his feet moved backward without thought.
“Freeze or we’ll shoot!” A man with short black hair, who was larger than a truck, leveled a gun at Carson’s head. The man could end all of Caron’s pain. The fear, the hunger, the uncertainty, the agony of losing his family. Just charge at the giant—or slip his hand into his pocket as if he had a gun—and the bullets would do the rest. But as he ran into the wall behind him, his muscles seized. He was going to die no matter what he did.
“Down on your knees and hands on your head!”
Without thought, Carson went down hard on his knees and rested his hands on his head. His head swam from hunger, and his legs shook. It was all he could do to remain upright. Carson closed his eyes and thought of his younger brother, Caden, and his mom. He just wanted this to be over quick.
“Strip him,” he heard the gruff voice say.
Carson’s chest locked up as hands grabbed him. They ripped Carson’s parka over his head and then his sweater and T-shirt were next. The chill on his skin sent a shudder through his emaciated body.
Please, do it quickly.
Hands held him by his shoulders and arms, as if at any minute he might resist. There wasn’t an ounce of resistance left in him, not an ounce of fight. Tears burned his eyes like acid. Gods, his life had sucked so far. This was the perfect ending.
The large man stepped forward. Heavy black boots scraped the floor. The letters NVJ in large white letters crossed his chest. New Vampire Justice. The vampire equivalent of a SWAT team, there because Carson had been trying to steal blood, an act punishable by immediate death.
“You have been caught in the act of stealing blood from a certified Vampire Blood Market, an act punishable by death by the Vampire Justice Act of 2003. Under the jurisdiction of the New Vampire Justice code number 456.5, I, Chief Enforcement Officer for the city of Utica, NY, hereby pass the sentence of death. Do you have anything you wish to say before this judgment is carried out?”
