My Top 10 Favorite Musicals of All-Time

The question was posed to me a couple of weeks ago, asking what my favorite musicals of all time were.  After compiling a list, thinking it over, adding, removing and revising, I have finally come up with my list.

My criteria was based upon a few factors of how…
…often I watch the movie
…many songs I like from the movie
…much the movie holds my attention

Here is my list

10 - Hairspray
My favorite song with movie comes at the end.  I like the underdog coming through on top.  There is a mixture of songs I enjoy in this movie and others I dislike.

9 - Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory
When I was a kid, I could remember when this movie was on, I would sit and watch if from beginning to the end, minus those two annoying songs towards the beginning.

8 - The Sound of Music
There is something about this movie I have always liked, although I’m not able to put my finger on it.

7 - Rent
I’ve seen the live show four times in my life, each time sitting in a different spot and loving it.  The movie though I think is great, lacks something I love with the live performance.

6 - High School Musical 3
This was a wonderful way of saying so long to a series of movies with a visually appealing cast, memorable songs and a storyline that didn’t make me want to hurl because of Disney sweetness.

5 - Camp
Vlad still makes me drool each and every time I watch this movie.  The songs and the storyline are interesting and

4 - Jesus Christ Superstar
I’ve seen four different versions of this, two movies and two live performances, each one I absolutely loved.

3 - Grease
Every time I get goose bumps at the cartoon beginning of this movie starts.

2 - The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert
From the first time I saw this movie, after seeing Too Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar, I loved it!  Adam, Tick and Bernadette are all characters that though nothing like me, I find myself relating to and enjoying watching.

1 - Pitch Perfect
This one I will go back and watch several of the song sequences over and over and over before continuing with the rest of the movie.

Honorable Mentions

South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut
This one has gone on my list and come off more than any other movie.  This movie is offensive and filled with toilet humor, each song I sing along with and they stick in my head for quite some time.

High School Musical 1
I am a fan of all three of these movies, but I was not going to have three movies on my list all be from the same series.  Only my favorite of them all made it.

Mamma Mia!
I love the setting for this movie and have often thought about how great it would be to visit.

High School Musical 2
If it was summer time, this would have booted the third installment – just to give you an idea of how my tastes can change with the seasons.

The Blues Brothers
The music in this is so not of my tastes, but it is a great movie.

Share With Me Your Favorites

As with my previous top 10, I would like to extend an invitation to you, please share with me your favorites.  If you do not have a top 10, share as many as you’d like.  Feeling shy?   Then email them to me.   Just as long as you share with me!  Don’t feel like you have to write up a whole big thing, because I know firsthand how daunting of a task this is.  Just titles will suffice.  I was impressed with all of the responses I received, many were ones I’d forgotten about and/or have decided to revisit.

The Two Fires That Changed My Life

It was almost a year ago from today when my friend showed me his Kindle Fire and suggested I read The Hunger Games. A day later, my friend let me play around with his Kindle Fire and I wanted one badly. For years, I'd been collecting hardback books, both for reading as a hobby and felt conflicted about not having a physical copy of a book.  I was heading out on a road trip to California when I downloaded the preview for The Hunger Games while waiting to leave.  Not ever being able to read in the car, I was going to read a couple of more sentences and put down my phone.  By the time I finished the preview we were going through Seattle, when I saw the full book was $5 and decided to buy it.

The next day, my mom insisted on buy me my Kindle Fire as an early birthday present.  In the 9 days of my road trip I would end up not only reading and loving all three books, with Catching Fire being my favorite, but also getting my good friend to get and read the series over the break along with me.  I loved being able to read in the car and not getting sick, as well as having the perfect lighting anytime that I wanted to read.  Little did I know this was only the beginning of changes yet to come for me.

Upon returning from my trip, I started exploring, previewing and buying other books.  I soon discovered something wonderful about the Kindle I never had with books, that being I could read whatever I wanted without fear of anyone seeing or judging what I was reading.  I could bring my book and read it anywhere.  If I wanted to share what book I was reading I could, if I didn’t I could easily say I was reading something else I’d already read.  It was not like I’d never read gay themed books and such, but I’d been limited to what I found out the library or ordered online.  Now I was able to check out all sorts of books and authors.

Soon I discovered the books I liked were all written by what I would learn were referred to as Indy or Indie authors.  These books seemed to have more heart and drew me into the stories deeper than anything I’d ever read before in my life.  I would find an author I liked, read their books and search until I found another author I thought I’d enjoy and repeat.  Never in my life had I read as if I was reading.

In the meantime, I had written a story prior to my trip, nothing much which I shared with a friend of mine who thought it was clever and thought I should write more on it.  The idea was something I had and felt I should write before it became a faded memory.  A month later after returning from my trip, I kept imagining what could have happen to this guy prior to what I had written and I wrote it out.  Something to me seemed to be missing and I thought about writing part of the story from another guy involved.  Thus Derrick and then Justin were born.  For two months I would think of ideas and write a novel that I would later title Finding Our Way.

Thankfully, a few of my friends help in any way they could to help get my book together and ready for sale.  From encouragement to editing, I have been so thankful to all that they have done for me.  Jen, has been right there for me since day one, putting in countless hours reading, editing, revising, offering advice and being the one to tell me when something is shit and not sugar coating it.  Paulie reads through and offers valuable feedback of what he thinks works and what he thinks needs to be tweaked, as well as being the first person to buy upon each release.  Susanne has been another set of eyes from reading through writing, sharing her opinion and being my sounding board because I want to talk through something we both know I am going to do anyways.     Then there are those people I have met along the way, from fellow authors to fans who I have been so glad to get to know and have helped each other out in various ways.

I’ve been truly amazed at how many people have…
·         Bought my books
·         Read my books
·         Liked my page
·         Subscribed to my blog
·         Sent me messages
·         Reviewed my book
·     And the list goes on

The way this year has turned out has been a pleasant surprise to me.  I am delighted to see what they next year has in store.  Who would have thought these two fires would have changed my life.

Thank you for taking part in this life-changing journey.

Inspiration Comes and Goes

As the coming of a storm, my passion for drawing sets in. Sometimes it lasts for as short as a couple of minutes and other times for many months on end. Friday it arrived, yet I was too sick to do anything with the desire. Luckily, it stuck around for a bit.

One thing I rarely do is draw my friends. This is for the same reason why I do not make them into characters into my books (or at least why I do not tell them I did), because of interpretation. How I see them may or may not be how they see themselves. For better or worse, I have always found it better just to stay away from it all together. Sure I see a picture that inspires me and I have to at least try and draw it, to get it out of my system, much like the ideas for writing are.

For the past year, most of my inspiration has been to draw guys. Typically, it is one and sometimes two, but usually is someone I find attractive.  Every so often, I draw a girl or something else, but it is pretty much just guys. To my delight, one of the drawings I do, one of my friends will insist be a great image for the cover of my next book. Then I spend a couple of months fiddling with it and believing it will never work out, until one day that it does.

Take for example the cover image for my upcoming book Drifting. I've fretted over that picture for months, trying to get the drawing just right, contemplating adding faces and although no one else wanted them I had to try and add them. I failed miserably at it and might have gone as far to have a bitch fit. Then when the image was the way I wanted it (and my wonderful panel of friends who provide critique so I have a marketable image) it was down to colors. Unlike the previous two books, the coloring took several tries before I had something that...  looked good, matched the color theme, matched the style and fit with the series. Like most things in my life, when I eventually quit over thinking it, it came together.

Well back to my lazy Sunday of drawing, reading and lounging.

Why I Shouldn't Work When I'm Tired

I just spent 2-hours using color pencils to color the cover art for Drifting.  I started on the left hand side (Derrick), the part I think looks the best and as my eyes and the rest of me felt more tired and my brain started shutting down, I started messing it up.  I tried to take a plaid pattern I love off of a pair of boxers, but even with the best intentions it still turned out like crap.  Since my mistake scrapped the drawing, I decided to work with other pattern ideas, thus the green and black on the arm.  Then I messed around with skin tones to see how they would scan in.  One of these days I am going to remember the correct color combinations so I do not have to go through hours of blending to get them correct.   I am wiped out and know that I am not going to do well even if I force the creativity tonight, but I have my colored pencils laid out across my desk, divided up in a way I can easily find the colors for my next attempt.  I will spew some profanities as I put them back in the box mixing them up.  That should make me feel better.

My sister is with me tonight.  Like most Monday’s she spends the evening with me.  Most nights she sleeps beside me or on nights I need to get things done, she messes with me.  I thought I would share a picture of her.  Often when people hear my sister is a bitch, they think I am being mean.   As you can see she literally is a bitch.  Really she is a sweet pit bull.  As you can see tonight she has made herself comfortable on my bed, which was made.  She likes to pull the comforter into a pile and lay down on it.  I’m sure she does it to piss me off, although I am sure it is comfortable.

I’m beat!  I stayed up until midnight last night.  I had to see the new Walking Dead, but then I saw Shameless was going to be on a half hour into the Talking Dead.  Usually this is when I go to bed, but instead I put my clothes for working out together, took care of a couple of other things.  By the time Shameless started my eyes were heavy.  Instead of going to bed I stuck it out until I dozed off.  So tonight I watched the episode, like I typically do.   The gay jokes on last nights episode had me rolling, although I am sure many people would find them offensive.

All right!  It’s time for me to get to bed!

What Do You Think?

My new blog layout went live this afternoon!  I am excited about having this layout, as I have always wanted it.   I think that it looks nice and is easier to read.  As I have time or feel inclined, I am going to go through to update, adjust and add to the content.

The banner is something I would like to change, if I can figure out the HTML to adjust the size.  I would like to have a smaller version of the original one I created for my blog.  I am also thinking about changing and deleting some of the pages.  I’ve also wanted to add in a page with Links to friends and other authors for people to check out.  This is going to be a while off though, unless my break from writing continues, which I hope it does not!

Right now, I just want people to check my website out!  I worked hard on it to get it to this point.

Would you like to win a $5 Amazon gift card?  Leave me a comment (or send me an Email) and let me know what you think!  I will take the names from the comments left and run them through random.org to select a winner.  Let me know if there is something you like or don’t like.  Is there anything you would like to see included.  You don’t have to like it to enter!

I look forward to reading your thoughts!

Big Changes Coming

I spent a good chunk of today going through to make some significant changes to my website/blog.   Although I still think of myself as a novice when it comes to HTML and all this blog stuff, I have to admit I am impressed with the changes I have planned for my website.

Taking this...

and making it this...

I cannot wait to have my website exactly the way I've always wanted it to be.  There are still a couple more bugs I need to work out.  It takes so much time and more patience than I seem to have this evening.
